9 Johnston St, Port Melbourne

When it’s completed in mid-2018, the rippling bronzed-glass façade of boutique development Alumuna will be one of the most sophisticated along the bay. With two street frontages  in the L-shaped allotment , the apartments will enjoy spectacular city views from Rouse Street and magnificent water views from Johnston Street. Architects Wood Marsh’s innovate design was to prioritise quality over quantity. Rather than packing 54 apartments in, they designed a mere 22: two penthouses, 16 three-bedroom apartments and 4 two-bedroom apartments – with variously two or three bathrooms, separate laundry and study. All apartments have an entrance hall. Lower numbers meant larger interiors. Each apartment comes with above-average acoustic protection, hydronic heating, integrated air conditioning and inset balconies which enhance the sense of privacy. Natural materials and expensive touches are replete throughout. Floors are finished in limewashed American oak and there are light and dark options for woollen carpets and imported marble benchtops. Kitchens are equipped with top-end Miele appliances, island benches and individual exhausts. Main bathrooms have a relaxed resort feel, with a free standing curved bath and floating vanities. The only shared spaces in the building are the lobby, car parks and storage.
